Going straight from a Walt Disney World resort to a Port Canaveral sailing is one of the more awkward days in a Florida holiday, and it is awkward for reasons that have nothing to do with the drive. Resort checkout is usually late morning. Boarding closes in the afternoon and does not move. In between you have a week's worth of luggage that no longer has a room to sit in, and quite often a final park morning that somebody in the group wants. What does a Disney to Port Canaveral transfer cost?

Insider note
Book the pickup for earlier than the arithmetic says. The drive is a little over an hour, but embarkation day has three things that all run late: resort checkout, bell services retrieving your luggage, and the terminal queue itself. An hour of slack costs you a coffee at the port. Being an hour short costs you the sailing, and the ship will not wait.
Why this particular day needs planning
Not because the drive is hard. Because everything either side of it is time-boxed and the deadline is absolute.

Every other deadline in a holiday has some give in it. This one has none, which is why we build slack in rather than quoting the quickest route.
A week of luggage, no room
After checkout the bags have nowhere to live. The vehicle becomes the answer, so it needs to be sized for cases rather than for people.

Not at a bus stop, not at a central pickup point. Your chauffeur comes to the porte-cochere of the resort you are actually leaving.

No shared shuttle collecting from four other resorts first, which is the version of this trip most people have had before and did not enjoy.
A final park morning is possible
If somebody wants a last few hours in a park, that can work. It just has to be planned rather than attempted.

How do you get from resort checkout to boarding?
Work backwards from the boarding window, not forwards from checkout. That single change is what makes this day work.
Start from your boarding window
Your cruise line gives you a window, and it is the only fixed point in the day. Everything else is arranged against it rather than the other way round.
Subtract the drive, then add slack
The Disney area to the terminals is a little over an hour in normal conditions. We add a genuine buffer on top rather than assuming normal conditions on an embarkation morning.
Subtract the resort exit
Checkout, retrieving luggage from bell services and getting a family to a kerb takes longer than anybody plans for. Half an hour is realistic, more with young children.
Whatever is left is your park morning
Sometimes that is three useful hours and sometimes it is none. Doing the arithmetic in this order tells you honestly which, before you promise it to anybody.
If you do want a final park morning
- Choose a park close to your resort, and prefer one you can leave quickly
- Check out first and travel with the bags rather than returning to the resort afterwards
- Set a hard leaving time and tell everybody in the group what it is
- Tell us the plan so the pickup is at the park rather than the resort if that suits better
Coming back the other way
Disembarkation is the easier direction but the earlier one, and the terminal is busy from first light. A booked pickup with a set time and place beats trying to arrange transport from a pavement with your luggage and several thousand other passengers.

Why luggage decides the vehicle on this trip
More than on any other transfer we run, and it is the thing groups get wrong most often.
- Cruise luggage is bigger - People pack differently for a sailing than for a park week: formal nights, more changes, and often a case each rather than shared bags. A group that arrived in a sedan frequently cannot leave in one.
- You have also been shopping - A week at Walt Disney World adds volume that was not there on the way in. It is a genuine factor by the end of the trip.
- The rule we use - Count the large cases, not the people. Up to 3 passengers with modest luggage suits a Luxury Sedan. The same three with three large cruise cases usually wants a Luxury SUV. Four or more people with a case each is a Van or an Executive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
- Tell us and we will size it - Give the passenger count and the case count separately when you enquire. We would much rather send a larger vehicle than have a family standing at a resort kerb on embarkation morning discovering the boot is full.

What catches people out on embarkation day?
Specific to this journey, and mostly about time rather than distance.
Bell services is the hidden delay
Retrieving stored luggage on a busy checkout morning is not instant. Allow for it rather than assuming the bags appear when you do.
The terminal has its own queue
Arriving at the port is not the same as boarding. Security and check-in take time, and they take more of it at the peak of the window.
528 is fine until it is not
The route east is usually straightforward, but a single incident on it has no useful alternative. That is the main argument for leaving early.
Name your terminal if you know it
Port Canaveral has several, and they are not adjacent. The cruise line tells you which; passing it on saves a lap of the port.
Size up, not down
The single most common problem on this route is a vehicle chosen on passenger count that cannot take the cases. Count the bags.
Cocoa Beach is minutes away
If your sailing is late in the day, an hour at the beach beats an hour at the terminal. Say so and we will build it in.
